Unearthing the Truth (Mock Editorial)
This piece was produced as a mock journal cover for Scientific American. Their December 2024 cover story, “When Horse Became Steed,” examines new multidisciplinary research taking place in Colorado. In it, experts reassess the history of horses using evidence from horse remains, radiocarbon dating, DNA, artifacts, and the written and oral histories of different cultures.

I aimed to create intrigue and reflect the multiple levels of this story, including the ways history, archeology, art and science are combined to understand it. A horse’s skull, a primary object of archeological investigation, is uncovered by a brush embossed with DNA. The skull is examined physically and scientifically, revealing a map that traces the origin and spread of horses over time. This unfolds against a backdrop of horse art created by people from many cultures over thousands of years, highlighting the countless ways horses are important to human history.
